Funding:
The not-for-profit Greater Glenside Patriotic Association (GGPA) pays for the entire July 4 celebration, which has annually featured at 10 a.m. We Love America Children’s Program at Cheltenham Township’s Renninger Memorial Park, Keswick Ave. and Waverly Rd.; the Grand, Glorious, Patriotic Parade (the 106th annual in 2009), at 4 p.m., 1.5-mile march through Glenside’s business district; and an after-dark America the Beautiful Aerial Fireworks Spectacular, launched from the Abington Township Maintenance Yard adjacent to southwest athletic fields of the Abington Senior High School campus, Highland Ave. and Ghost Rd.
GGPA officials said that rainy weather during last year’s Parade and fireworks show seriously affected and reduced on-site financial donations by viewers attending both events. As a result, the GGPA is facing a serious funding shortfall that may cause cancellation of the morning children’s program and fireworks, and a trimmed-down parade scheduled for Saturday, July 4, with a rain date of Sunday, July 5.
Recently re-elected to one-year terms as association officers for 2009 were Albert L. Hermann, president; Margy and Rick Kass, vice presidents; Cathy Henninger, secretary; Barbara A. Nye, treasurer; and Donald Lawrence, assistant treasurer, all of Glenside.
Tax-deductible contributions to the GGPA are accepted year-round at P.O. Box 72, Glenside, PA, 19038. Open to the general public, association meetings are the second Tuesday of each month at 7:30 p.m. in the rear conference room of the Glenside Welden Fire Co., Easton Rd. north of Kewick Ave. The next ones are May 12 and June 9.
