Early Call For More Volunteers
Glenside, PA - - Greater Glenside's Independence Day Celebration of America's 230 birthday on Tuesday, July 4th. is four months off, but that does not mean it's too early to announce a growing need for more volunteers to help plan for and conduct the popular morning-into-night summer event.
That word comes from the non-profit Greater Glenside Patriotic Association (GGPA), an all-volunteer membership group that annually sponsors the community's three-tier July 4th celebration.
Among key volunteer needs are more marshals and aides to help fully cover the 1.5-mile start-to-finish route of the 103rd Grand, Glorious, Patriotic Parade. That march, routed through the business heart of Glenside, is among America's oldest, consecutively run 4th of July parades.
Volunteers are also needed to help raise funds; sell celebration caps, t-shirts and novelties; assist in the We Love America Children's Program at 10 a.m. each July 4th at Cheltenham Townships Renninger Memorial Park in south Glenside; and handle crowd control and canvassing duties at the America The Beautiful Aerial Fireworks Spectacular launched from outside Abington Township's Police Facilities Building in North Glenside.
Individuals or representatives of service clubs, business organizations, religious, school and other groups interested in becoming patriotic association volunteers are urged to attend GGPA meetings in the rear conference room of the Glenside Weldon Fire Co., Easton Road north of Keswick Avenue. To begin at 7:30 p.m., meetings will occur on the following Tuesdays April 12th, May 10th, June 14th & 28th.
Volunteer aspirants may also call the association's recently re-elected officers: Albert Herrmann, president (215-884-5712); John Sweeney, vice president (267-738-0657); Cathy Henninger, Secretary (215-886-5184) and Barbara Nye, treasurer (215-887-8279). Calls may also be directed to parade co-chairpersons, Abington Township Glenside Ward 13 commisioner Michael Gillespie (215-884-3597) and Ann Langdon (267-481-1351).
Contributions to the patriotic association are tax-exempt and accepted year-round at P.O. Box 72, Glenside, PA 19038
